The Social, Humanitarian and Cultural Committee (SOCHUM) is the third General Assembly of the United Nations, tasked with a broad mandate surrounding social, humanitarian and human rights issues from around the world. To delineate a general idea of the committee, some issues discussed within SOCHUM include but are not limited to: human rights, global literacy, women’s rights, children’s rights, the treatment of refugees and displaced persons, international drug control, crime prevention, and the elimination of racism and discrimination. SOCHUM also works closely with many other UN bodies in order to effectually address its mandated issues.

Contemporary Forms of Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia, and Related Intolerance
Delegates will discuss the prevalence of xenophobia and its implications regarding refugees, and weigh each nations right to national sovereignty in its acceptance of refugees, and natural human rights of refugees. Delegates must take into consideration the role that culture, as well as ethnic and religious make up, plays in discrimination and violence against refugees.
Human Trafficking
Delegates will discuss how to remedy the root causes of the practice of human trafficking. Traffickers often trap their victims by posing as job opportunities, which is why this practice is most prevalent in developing countries. As such, though human trafficking is found across the globe. delegates should give special consideration countries in Africa and Asia, where this issue is most rampant.

Sonya Poznansky is a junior at Boston University Academy, and she is looking forward to BUAMUN 2019. Last year she vice-chaired the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) GA committee, and she is excited to be co-chairing SOCHUM this year. |
Ben Isakoff '21 CO-CHAIR |
Benjamin Isakoff is a sophomore at Boston University Academy, and this will be his second year of BUAMUN. Last year, Benjamin vice-chaired for BUAMUN in the Peloponnesian League crisis committee. He looks forward to participating in this upcoming BUAMUN and is excited for the new round of faces ready to compete. This year he will be co-chair of SOCHUM. Other than MUN, he plays the trombone and plays Tennis and Basketball. |
